Update: Zecco has now merged with TradeKing.

Zecco is a well designed online trading platform with reasonable fees and plenty of features. It has a clean and modern feel to it and seems to be trying to appeal to a youngish clientèle, but still provides all the serious features required to take advantage of the markets. It perhaps doesn't go quite far enough to attract the most serious investors out there, but with its easy to use tools and excellent community features, casual investors will find everything they need.

Without even signing up to Zecco you can get a feel for how the tools work by trying out the stock streamer application from the tools menu. What you will find is a very well designed streaming quotes tool that is highly customizable and very easy to use. You'll have to sign up to get access to the rest of what's available, but rest assured everything is as good looking as this. There are several screening tools to help you filter out investments you wouldn't be interested in and you can even save screens and share them with the Zecco community. Most importantly though, you can set alerts to notify you when something happens with any stock you are interested in.

Once you have a few investment ideas you can get a free practice account at Zecco to try them out. This provides almost the full functionality of the Zecco suite of tools, but doesn't place real trades, allowing you to see if your strategies are working. Placing trades is extremely easy and can be achieved in just a couple of clicks from most of the tools. An interesting extra Zecco provides is a browser plugin that scans the web pages you are reading for mention of stocks you can trade. If it finds any you can can then place a trade instantly without leaving the site. This is very handy when you are researching outside of Zecco and don't want to open up another browser window to make a trade.

Zecco's moto is that if something is tradeable you can trade it on the site so there are plenty of different types of investment to suit any type of investor. The fees charged on trades are quite reasonable, but there are no discounts for volume which may put very active traders off. If you need to make a broker assisted trade, customer service is always on hand and can provide help with any aspect of trading or using the platform. Additionally there is some excellent educational material to help new investors get started.

We would recommend Zecco to anyone looking for a first online trading platform. It makes getting started very easy and provides lots of information to help you make sensible investment decisions. There might not be the one to one advice you would get from a brick and mortar company, but with the proper research anyone can invest wisely. However, if you are a serious trader looking for very advanced features and volume trading discounts check out our top ten for some excellent choices.
